Written by MA Staff ModelAviation.com online exclusive Photo and source by the Library of CongressPresident Franklin Roosevelt in 1939 proclaimed August 19 as National Aviation Day. This is a chance to celebrate the history and development of aviation. The date coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright. Orville who, together with his brother Wilbur, made significant contributions to powered flight. As with most major advancements in aviation, the Wright Brothers used a model aircraft to conduct experiments. See a photo at the end of this article showing a replica of the box-kite model aircraft the Wright Brothers used when developing their aircraft. Orville Wright made the first flight for 12 seconds and 120 feet around the site of Wright Brothers National Memorial on December 17, 1903. The Wright Brothers were the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed wing flight possible, but they were not necessarily the first to build and fly an experimental aircraft.
