Members of the Southern Tier Aero Radio Society (STARS) in Hornell, New York, have been busy this spring erecting their new pilots’ shelter. The shelter features electrical connections, a firm stone base, and steel construction that should last a lifetime. Both modelers and spectators will benefit from the new structure.
STARS members removed their previous wooden pilots’ shelter earlier this year. Club volunteers later prepared a gravel base for good footing and stability for the new structure. Later, the shelter’s framework and roof were erected, followed by the installation of electrical outlets for battery charging and for use at club activities.
STARS is fortunate to own its own flying site. Throughout the years, the club has invested in a storage building, covered picnic tables, both geotextile fabric and grass runways, electrical hookups for RVs, and now its new pilots’ shelter.
Congratulations to STARS on its efforts. Visit the STARS Facebook page at facebook.com/groups/267182855015900.
A wise man once said that "a business without signs is a sign of no business." This is very true, and true of AMA clubs, which cannot expect to increase membership, or otherwise be known in the community, without promoting their club to the general public. Today, the most significant "sign of business" is the internet and social media. Having an up-to-date, online presence is essential for club growth.
One AMA club with a good online presence is the West Jersey Radio Control Club (WJRC) in Mantua, New Jersey. In addition to an excellent website, the club has an active Facebook page, which gives the general public a good picture of club activities, the club’s members, and, of course, the fun of flying model aircraft.
If your club is seeking members or working to increase its public image, be certain to establish a public presence on Facebook, X, TikTok, or any other social medial site. To see more about the WJRC, visit wjrc.org.
Remember, it’s not about what you fly, it’s about the friends you make.
