Ama In Action Advocating For Members

ON JUNE 22, 2021, AMA was approved to administer The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) and began offering TRUST to the entire community of model aviation enthusiasts. TRUST is free for everyone to take, so be cautious of any site that has a fee associated with taking it.

Additionally, some sites might offer to send you a laminated copy of your TRUST completion certificate for a fee after you have completed the test. Although it is not against the rules, there is no requirement to purchase these cards.

Furthermore, there is no set deadline to take TRUST, but the FAA recommends taking the test as soon as practical.

To remain current with the most recent government-related news, regularly visit the AMA Government Affairs blog at www.modelaircraft.org/gov. Here you will find the most up-to-date information, including a TRUST FAQ page.

Temporary Flight Restrictions

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is a type of Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the FAA that defines an area with restricted air travel because of hazardous conditions, special events, space operations, security, and VIP travel.

As some of you might know, when President Joe Biden returns to his home in Delaware, the FAA imposes a TFR of 28 nautical miles from his home at the request of the U.S. Secret Service. Establishing these TFRs has the consequence of shutting down local AMA chartered clubs. Although AMA strongly supports ensuring the highest level of security for the president and his family, we believe that our model aircraft operations can safely and securely operate in the outer ring of the TFR zone.

Since November 2020, AMA has been regularly meeting with the Secret Service and the FAA regarding President Biden’s visits to Delaware. This has been a lengthy process and we now plan to ask Congress to assist us with it. Although special event waivers within the TFR are something we have been successful in securing, we continue to work toward a more permanent solut ion regarding day-to-day operations.

By granting a waiver to allow an AMA club’s flying site to continue operations while a TFR is in effect for Wilmington and Rehoboth, Delaware, the Secret Service and FAA can maintain the security of the president, help protect the long-standing model aviation hobby, and support the local community.

A current list of all NOTAM/TFRs can be found at www.modelaircraft.org/media-resources/faa-notams.
