June 2025 - District VII

Hello District VII members. We have made it through the winter and spring has peeked its head out. When you are reading this, summer should be here.

A special day has passed by the time you are reading this column, and I would like to take time to acknowledge it. That day was Mother’s Day.

Many times, we write about the adventures we have with our various forms of flight, but where would any of us be without our mother’s love? We even forget about what our mothers, grandmothers, and others have done for all of us.

An event that the Capital Area Radio Drone Squadron (CARDS) in Lansing, Michigan, participated in was a day to honor an icon of American history, Rosie the Riveter. Rosie the Riveter was a representation of the women who worked in factories, shipyards, construction, transporting aircraft, and many other things supporting the war efforts of World War II.

It is hard to imagine the strength that they had to send their husbands and sons to war, and yet immerse themselves into supporting the war effort. More than 19 million women went to work to support the war.

Each year, in recognition of this tremendous contribution, March 21 is dedicated as National Rosie the Riveter Day. This year, the CARDS participated in this event, which was held in Lansing at the Capital City Airport. Bringing models of WW II airplanes, such as those the Rosies of the time would have worked on, they had a wonderful display. Some beautiful full-scale aircraft from the era that were on display at the airport and awards to families whose relatives had been a part of this effort.

I want to extend much appreciation to CARDS member Bill Lietzau and President JC Smith for the exceptional efforts to have a top-notch display.

As spring passes into summer and we enjoy our model aviation hobby, remember to thank your mothers, grandmothers, and mothers-in-law for all that they have done, as well as the love and the caring that they provide to us all.

Until next month, enjoy the fine weather and, of course, share the passion!
